These are some of the videos I took from the Fire Dancing Expo this weekend.
I love it when people have a sense of humor about their music and don’t take themselves too seriously.
This kid from Japan was probably my favorite. Great showmanship.

I wanted to check out The Really Really Free Market more for the experience than for actually grabbing things. I really don’t need anymore material possessions. I have waaaay too many things as it is and really need to have a garage sale and scale back before I start to feel like a hoarder. But I was surprised to see that they were also giving away free food.

I managed to score a beans and rice burrito, a veggie tofu burrito, some chocolate soy milk, and a Power to the Peaceful DVD.
How granola is that?

If you’re ever flying around San Francisco on a sunny day look down at the giant empty parking lot in the southwest corner of the city. You can’t miss it. Giant empty parking lot. No cars. That’s the top of the Sunset Water Reservoir which has got one of the best views of the sunset and may soon be the largest municipal solar generating project in the country.
The city is brokering deals with a private company, Recurrent Energy, to spend up to $40 million dollars and put in 12 football fields of solar panels by next year. It’s a pretty ambitious project and a great use of a giant empty parking lot that’s just been soaking up sun anyway.
Here’s what the Sunset Water Reservoir looks like today.
It will be interesting to see what the project looks like when it’s done.

This has got to be one of my favorite landmarks and one of the best places to catch the Sunset.

Normally it’s pretty windy up here, but during the heat wave earlier this week everyone was just wearing shorts and a shirt. You didn’t even need a jacket.

I actually like the 10 minutes or so after the sun has set the most. That’s when on some days Mother Nature puts on a Pink Floyd caliber light show; it really brings out the colors in the skies.

I love the urban sunsets; that changing of the guard as the natural light of God is clocking out for the day and the artificial man-made lights are starting to wake up for their shift. It’s easy to forget about them during the day or night, but during those few moments of transition between day and night the light really brings out all of the urban wiring of the city. Living under all that spider web of cables and wires it sometimes feels like all of San Francisco is some lost pirate ship.

Nastertiums are very colorful and very violent. They’re basically just a pretty weed with tropical leaves and edible flowers that have a slight peppery taste. They will also slowly murder any plant next to them. These were planted years ago in front of the house and then also ripped out years ago. Yet, like the Friday the 13th franchise in her prime, every year she comes back.
We also planted some of these in San Jose years ago.
Win also tried to rip them out years ago and got her ass cut up in the process.
Don’t fuck with Nastertiums.
They will cut you.

It was a gorgeous low-90s heat-wave day yesterday and the entire teenage wasteland nation was scrambling for shade, like Burning Man at high noon.
There was this great dog that was sitting down next to me. Every now and then it would lift its head, close its eyes, and just sniff out whatever smoke trail was drifting within its vicinity. I was watching him do that for a few minutes before going over and talking to the dog’s owner.
“I just wanted to say you’ve got a great dog. I don’t know if you noticed, but she’s doing this cute thing where she closes her eyes, lifts her head up, and is able to sniff any smoke trail that comes next to her.”
And the dog’s owner said “Oh, that’s because she’s blind.”
And I felt like the biggest dick in the park.
But her owner was super nice and explained that she came down with glycomia when she was two and now five years later she’s still doing fine. She’s been able to survive in the city just relying on her other senses. That’s amazing. There’s such an onslaught of audio overload in the city, even on blocks where there isn’t any construction. And then you can go from that to secluded park life where it’s quiet and peaceful, then turn the corner and you’re on 19th Ave, which is basically a freeway with stoplights and bus stops. Being able to survive without your sight in this city is amazing.

Nice meeting you, Daredevil Dog.
You are by far the most unique soul that I met on 420.

There’s been lots of amazing gymnastics in the park lately. I’m not sure if you would call this yoga or Jedi training, I think I might just stick with Kung Fu for now. Wherever there’s a drum circle on a sunny day you can find these guys practicing.

And lately the drum circle by The Conservatory Flowers has been going OFF. I was there on a Thursday at 3PM and they had a solid group sound that included someone on guitar and someone else on a didgeridoo and all the different sounds complimented each together.
