California Academy of Sciences FREE for Sunset residents 1

The California Academy of Sciences has started a new free day specifically for local residents. If you live in The Sunset you got in for free today and there was almost no line to get in. Amazing.

The trick is to grab the free passes to the Planetarium and the 3D Show as soon as you get in and then plan your day around those shows.

This was another shot of the line to get in from a few hours later.

If you were trying this on that other free day there would be 300+ people in line ahead of you.

And then again in September 11, 12, 13, 2009

Sunday Skating at Skatin’ Place.

Sunday skating at Skatin' Place 1

Every Sunday the city closes down a few streets in Golden Gate Park to car traffic and D Miles hosts his Sunday skating at Skatin’ Place get down.

D has got really good taste in music and Skatin’ Place is a magnet for all these colorful and talented skaters and onlookers.

I was tripping out on this kid in the orange pants. This guy was ripping it up.

Now check it out as he circles by. He’s bent over like a pretzel and skating on one leg, with his other leg sticking out and his head just inches above the concrete.

Although good luck getting inside. Normally tickets are $25 for adults, so the free day is a big deal.

Check out how the line wraps around the outside of the building towards the edge of the bandshell park…

And then the line continues on OUTSIDE of the bandshell. Madness…

Although there is a new Nightlife event that the Academy is throwing on Thursday nights for $10 and they have House DJs spinning beats. That event seems to be a lot more feasible.

De Young museum. FREE the first Tuesday of the month.

You can tell that the designer of this building graduated from The Jawa Sandcrawler School of Architecture. I know that rubs some people the wrong way and comes off as lazy, but it also makes for a great icon. The free days at the De Young are a breaze, there wasn’t even a line to get in. Nothing like the insanity that’s the free day at the California Academy of Science.

There’s a great view from the tower. The California Academy of Science is directly across and has one of the more interesting roofs.

The bandshell has got to be one of my favorite places for parties. They used to have free ones there all the time, now it’s only a handful per year.

I live for free parties in the park.

Japanese Tea Gardens. FREE the first hour every Monday.

Since I’m no longer working for The Man, I’ve made it my mission to check out as many of the local tea gardens, museums, and BDSM dungeons during their free days or hours. The Japanese Tea Gardens in Golden Gate Park is one of my favorite places. At 115 years, it’s the single oldest Japanese style garden in America. It’s a really peaceful part of the park and a great place for pictures.

And here’s the 219-year-old Buddha. The guy is in great shape considering that he’s exposed to the elements and doesn’t even have a heavy jacket on.

The Buddha is hardcore like that.

Semper Fi, Brother.
